"The TST which has all DMCs - even DMC2!"

Introduction

Who could believe it? The greatest DMC tournament in the world is *sniff* finally over ;_;

That's right, folks. The final round videos are up. After this, TST4 is no more, an ex-TST, deader than an unpopular Monty Python sketch, etc. Thanks to all the participants who took part and to all the folks who watched the videos and voted on them. This isn't it, though: we'll be back for TST5! :p

TO THE VIEWER: If you go for the YouTube option, then I recommend watching the HQ version where available: it really does look hell of a lot better. A few videos don't have an HQ option, but most do. If you have a YouTube account, then you can set videos to play in HQ by default underneath Account > Playback Setup.

*This is Hiro's official entry, but he also submitted another entry which I had to reject due to it going too far over the time limit. However, I felt it was a shame to let a decent entry go to waste, so I decided to upload it to YouTube, so that people who were interested could view it. Needless to say, do not vote for this version! Click here to access it.

TST4: Rounds, rules and dates

First off, these will be the rounds. (Dates given a bit further down.)

The rules are as follows:

DMC-specific rules:

Phew. So much for the rules section: that was a bit long... <__<. Now for the dates :p

Dates:

Each submission date falls on a Sunday. I'm hoping that by having the weekend to finish up their entries, I'll get less of the: "Is it all right if I hand it in tomorrow?"-type questions from folks <_<. I'm not an ogre about late entries, but with 3 weeks in between each round, I would seriously fuckin' appreciate it if the vast majority of you could get your entries in on time. Thanks.

A potted history of TST

(Or, how it all came about)

Sit down, class >_>

Today I'm going to teach you about TST and how it all started.

Really old :p
In the old days, video games were black and white.

TST1

The first True Style Tournament began one day in 2005 when a trio of chaps with superlative DMC3 skills - tatsumaruX, Pokey and DanteLink - got together and decided to have a video competition. If memory serves, it was in response to morons arguing on GameFAQs about who the best player was. Thus from the very beginning, the ethos of TST was established: winning wasn't important and there was no such thing as a "best" player. (Which maybe explains why to this day there has never been an overall winner of TST declared, only winners of individual rounds.) Style-based rounds were also established with TST1: there were six rounds, each one representing one of Dante's styles: Trickster, Swordmaster, etc. The location was always Mission 1. The results matched, suitably enough, the cooperative spirit of the tournament: each of the three participants won 2 rounds each.

Note: There were TST1 videos (well, it would be a bit hard to hold a video tournament without any videos >_>), but the site that they were hosted on has gone down the crapper. There's a faint possibility of me recovering the videos from the bowels of my old PC, but I wouldn't honestly hold your breath waiting.

TST2

TST1 was a big hit with the DMC community, so it was only natural there should be a second TST the following year and that other players wanted to get their share of the action - which they did. Pokey was responsible for the organisation of TST2, while Devils Lair hosted the videos. Sadly, however, the other two TST1 participants, Tats and DanteLink, had little to do with the sequel: DanteLink entered the Trickster round (with an absolutely kickarse entry, I might add), but that was about it. For TST2, the location was changed to Mission 2 and two new rounds were added: Dark Slayer (DMC3:SE was out by this time) and FreeStyle. Pokey had a laid-back style: he repeatedly said that it was fine for viewers to vote for any reason they felt like, for example. TST2 was another success story, which saw the farewell of the old DMC3 vanguard (Xarugas, Integsta, Ethereal, etc.) and the heralding in of a new DMC3 vanguard (Brea, Moe, flamer0, etc.)

TST3

There almost wasn't a TST3 in 2007/8. Two years after the release of DMC3:DA and one year after the release of DMC3:SE, interest in DMC3 had dwindled heavily: it seemed as though everyone was waiting for the release of the terminally delayed DMC4 instead. Only on PB did a small but dedicated DMC3 community remain. In this instance, though, appearances were apparently deceptive. TST3 took off in a big way and the 'new' vanguard (as mentioned above) produced some brilliant gameplay for it. I had taken over both the organisation and hosting of TST3. It was an experience, but here is not the place to rue the many mistakes I made... <__<. (Sorry. Just giving you every confidence in my organisation/hosting of TST4 there :p) At any rate, TST3 nearly came a cropper on a foreseen event: the release of the DMC4 demo. It probably didn't help that the demo release coincided with TST's quietest two rounds, Quicksilver and Doppelganger. It did pick up again for the final two rounds, Dark Slayer and Freestyle, luckily. TST3 introduced one major innovation over previous TSTs: players were allowed to choose their own locations and were no longer confined to a single mission. This actually worked really well.

And finally... :p

TST4!

Once again I'm organising and hosting this year's TST. Obviously, I can't write a potted history on a tournament which hasn't happened yet: but watch this space >_>

The party begins! (I hope)

Sorry. I never did get around to doing the things I meant to do with regards to TST4 and this page: my apologies =/ ... I did shift the potted history underneath the rules, as the more astute of you may have noticed. Anyway, at the same of writing this, the party (TST4) has just begun, so let us hope it's a good one.

If you have any questions, please register at the Phantom Babies forum and PM me or ask on the DMC3 board. You can also email me at phantombabies@hotmail.co.uk, but to be honest I rarely check my email these days. You're far more likely to get a response from me at PB, DL (Devils-Lair) or GameFAQs (DMC1 or 3 boards) than via email.

In the meantime, hope to see you at TST4! The TST which has all DMCs - even DMC2!

Joch :p
