whoa

#1 Post by Andy » Sat Dec 17, 2011 2:46 pm

I was reading Jeb's posts on Vanquish ("Jeb" sounds like the name of a lonely groundskeeper) and I realized how wonderful the english language is. It's like there's three words for everything. So you can understand dudes' inflections EVEN OVER TEXT. Also, it means rap in English is really fucking good because there are like a hundred words for every idea, leading to lots of DEADLY RHYMES. I don't know how good Polish rap is or whatever, but English is so cavernous, it's a very 'expressive' language. Maybe I think that because I only know English. Fuck I am an uneducated scum.

PS I was drinking tonight. Could you tell?

I agree; it is a wonderfully expressive language.
"Do people who spend all their lives questioning the nature of reality, on their deathbeds, realize much too late that this reality is all they ever had? And, in a similar vein: do people who spend all their lives questioning the nature of happiness, on their deathbeds, realize much too late that they squandered every single opportunity they ever had for real and lasting happiness on Earth?"

Hmmm.. no, not really. English is such an obtuse and restrictive language. The spelling is also arbitrary as fuck.
...I'm fairly sure if they took porn off the internet there'd only be one website left and it'd be called 'Bring Back the Porn'...

I agree that it is obtuse, but like most obtuse things that are intricate, it is capable of a lot of great things.

I, too, was drinking tonight! I am having another!

As someone who learned English all on his own and is helping a native English speaker to learn my native language. I would say no, it isn't.

As Mythbusters have proven, you can polish shit and it will have a shine on it. But at the end of the day, it's still poop.

Yeah, I feel that. Many exceptions to rules, made up words, words stolen from other languages... it's a big jumble of bullshit that ended up being great for other reasons. It's like the Marvel vs Capcom 2 of languages. I love it.

Well, Arabic has been pretty much unchanged for over 1400 years. So it's like the Street Fighter II of Languages.

SUCK ON THAT, SUCKAH!

You miss the point. English is hard and generally arbitrary. It also requires a lot of memorization for specific verb conjugation and spelling rules for all of the homonyms. However, if one is skilled and knowledgeable in the language, it is extremely expressive.

Are you feeling good, great, energetic, lively, vivacious, or any other word that has a slightly more appropriate degree of meaning?

Did you eat, consume, devour, inhale, or gulp down your meal?

You will never have to settle for a word that /almost/ means what you think in your head, because English borrows and modifies and adjusts so many words from other languages in addition to having its own. And these aren't just high level, snobby, GRE synonyms; they're commonly used words, phrases, and expressions. The language provides you with the tools to say exactly what you want, and the punctuation is marvelous at expressing intonation. Commas and semicolons FTW!

For example, you can say "I'm fucking drunk" or "I'm pleasantly inebriated" or "that asshole is intoxicated like a motherfucker" and from any of those three sentences, people can guess that you're an asshole.
