The Great GATSBY

#1 Post by carterboy » Thu Jun 28, 2012 7:10 am

So, maybe it's a little early for this. But, I can't help myself.

I love Baz Luhrmann. I love Leonardo DiCapprio. I fucking LOVE F. Scott Fitzgerald. He's my favorite author not named Nick Hornby.

The Great Gatsby will always, of course, be one of my favorites. So I'm super excited to see what one of my favorite director/producers does with one of my favorite actors with one of my favorite works by one of my favorite authors. I mean, just check out this pimp--ass trailer!

I'm also interested in Toby McGuire's Nick Carraway, as Carraway holds a special place in my heart as the first character I'd encountered like that--a guy narrating the book to tell someone else's story (I've never read Moby Dick). Damn, I'm gonna have to pull back out my copy.

So, I know Lady K's into this one. Who else? Thoughts? Or we could just gush about the book for a while.

I was annoyed that they used No Church in the Wild when they had so many good period pieces they could've chosen from, but then I realized I kinda like NCitW and Kanye wasn't going on about the fact that his grandparents were slaves for once.

I would like to see it.

I've been waiting on this movie. Can't wait to see it. Haven't seen the original The Great Gatsby though.

I'd never heard that song before. It's from Watch the Throne? I thought it was cool, though.

My friend is always going on about those "beautiful shirts."

I saw one of the previous versions back in high school. I don't remember enjoying it very much. At least, I don't remember very much from it.

I also saw a version when I was in high school - it wasn't bad, but it certainly wasn't a Baz Luhrmann movie! Him directing is one of the main reasons this holds so much interest for me. I haven't read the book in years either, and I was thinking about re-reading it.. and then I tried to search for an e-book version on amazon and was shocked at how expensive it was for an old classic. >.> stupid

The Great Gatsby's copyright should be up. Try Project Gutenberg.
You're beautiful as you say the words.

When I originally was interested in purchasing the book, and found it to be so expensive, I did check the copyright. Technically because I am in the US, I am still not legally allowed to download it. The copyright is up in places like Australia, but laws in the US (and Europe, from what I gather) are different. Works copyrighted in 1923 or later can remain copyrighted for up to 95 years after publication.

so technically I can't download it for free.

I'm not sure what you mean by "if you're around" but I'm totally always around. XD

I meant if you were actually physically near me, spatially, on earth.

I also very strongly suggest The Last Tycoon, Fitzgerald's last unfinished. I thought it was really good and modern. Obviously, it ends kind of abruptly.

Unfortunately, I live on the moon. ;_;

Hm, I don't think I've ever actually read anything other than Gatsby.. I suppose I probably should. XD

Dunno if anyone's kept up with caring about this movie, but the recently released trailer makes me wet. Anyone else love this amazing version of Filter's "Happy Together?"

Honestly, it just kind of bothers me that the spam account's name is on every board.

But, I'm also kind of interested in finding out if people liked it.
