The Evil Within

#1 Post by birdman » Thu Jun 06, 2013 5:22 am

So, this is Shinji Mikami's promise of true horror.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-P5Qm0zkV4

No gameplay yet. I disagree with some of what was said. Like if there's too much horror the player will think "This game is too scary" and put the control down.

Thanks for thinking for us Shinji.

From that video it seems there's elements of a few other games.
-Silent Hill (being trapped in another dimension)
-Haunting Ground (enemies can appear from anywhere/you can also lead stalkers into traps, certain items can be put on the ground and act as traps/you can hide Hewie at certain points and ambush a stalker.

A few comments make this sound so similar to Haunting Ground, such as when the character is scared and trying to get away, they want the player to feel the same. Looking at the animation that plays of that character struggling to run, I wonder if this game is going to try the same thing HG does in which the character gets more scared the closer the enemy is.

HG is being chased down, having limited stamina, occasional stumbling, unable to use key items or do puzzles, the screen begins to distort more and more. Taking damage makes you run slower and have an injured appearance, and eventually you'll enter panic mode in which sends the character over the edge and she starts screaming and running/stumbling all over the place.

It really seems like they're describing HG at times. The 'cat and mouse' comment perfectly describes HG.

I also saw in another video that had screenshots of the character crouching and moving with stealth. This not only reminds me of HG where making noise such as footsteps, breaking stuff can attract a stalker, but also Siren where you can move while crouching and avoid detection.

I really like that there will be limited resources and no heavy weapons.

Well, I've said enough for now. What do you guys think?

Sorry, I just meant it looks like a similar thing happens where the surrounding warps.

It doesn't take much to set you guys off.

Just leave it alone and discuss this game.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B3XJPQs3INk

More details for whoever is interested.

Some stuff on traps and how the player can die easily. That right there is exactly what Haunting Ground has and I'm wondering if someone from HG is on the development team for this game.

It says players can turn the traps against their enemies. HG has traps that kill the player instantly, or put them at a disadvantage. There's traps that can hurt the player or the stalker depending on the position of both. Pretty much the same thing here.

About the SH comparison. As you'll hear the guy say, the hallways, walls, doors, everything will warp around the character.

That spider woman or whatever it is freaks me out.

Who gives a fuck? SH2 was decent but everything else was shit. Fucking nerds.

SH2 was boring shit. SH3 is the only fun one in the series.

Interviews and gameplay.

I'm surprised they act like this is something new and amazing. Did no one play Haunting Ground and Siren.
So far it looks like it plays identically to Siren with HG elements. That big guy seems to follow the same pattern of walking out of the room enabling you to get the key and the 'stealth mode' are ripped directly from Siren.

The the comments about trying to stay quiet and moving slowly is purely HG. I know I keep making these comparisons and I don't mean them in a bad way, I'm just surprised at how no one seems to realize that this has been done before. On and on about how the enemies are dynamic when Clock Tower 3 and HG did this years ago.

Did you just say that a game invented being quiet and walking slowly?

I think the point isn't that they're copying old AI, but rather that they can do this stuff to a much higher degree of technical prowess with modern day processing. I used a lot of words with a high syllable count, and now I feel like a big douche.

I'm not saying for sure that Siren or HG invented that. I know that in the MGS games you can do that.
And there's probably other games that have these mechanics too. I don't know the release dates on everything or who created what first.

I'm looking forward to this, though it probably sounds like I'm negative with all the comparisons.

Also-Haunting Ground felt like a massive rip off of Clock Tower (3 at least, didn't play the others)
Just sayin'. Gameplay wise, at least.

But I'm still interested in this-I enjoyed Clocktower, Haunting Ground, Silent Hill(1,2,3, Homecoming, origins) and if nothing else I'll keep my eye out for it due to Mikami's name. I always wonder how the Capcom escapees fare out in the world.

[quote]Haunting Ground felt like a massive rip off of Clock Tower [quote]

Haunting Ground was apparently going to be CT4, so not really a rip-off at all.

The Evil Within will be released this Tuesday for US and Thursday for me in NZ. Seems Germany got it early and people are streaming it on Twitch but keep getting banned. I've been able to watch quite a bit and learn a lot of the mechanics so far.

I'm a little disappointed in some things. It's definitely not as extreme as Mikami made it out to be.

I got the game. It's pretty cool so far, like a darker and slower RE4, though there are some annoying things that I hope I'll get used to.

Which version are you playing? I'm playing the PS3 version and it's a technical mess though I guess the positive trade-off is 20 second load times compared to the 40 seconds I've been hearing about for the Xbone/PS4; the one hour video from Bethesda was already ringing alarm bells and after playing Mass Effect 2 on PS3 I really didn't want to go through that again. It's also obvious that either Mikami's team didn't completely know what they were doing with iD tech 5 or they just didn't have time to polish (my suspicion. 5 versions? Fuck off. Platinum already took ages just polishing 2 versions of their games and expecting 5 by October 2014 is bullshit).

Game looks ugly as fuck like someone wiped their ass over every texture and the pop-in for everything is really distracting. It's like Castellano has this aura that causes everything to appear when he comes within a few meters of them. Sometimes it doesn't kill the great atmosphere but the rest of the time I keep noticing it. Even with the PC screens below it doesn't look much better.

The PC version specs also had people worried and anyone who knew their shit could tell immediately that the port was poor. Total Biscuit talks about this on reddit and found:
-shit port confirmed when the game still drops frames despite not using anywhere near the amount of resources it requires.
-game is locked at 30fps. It can be easily unlocked with funny results but otherwise it's pretty solid.
-the cinematic 2.5 aspect ratio can't be fixed. Forcing 16:9 simply crops the screen, so you lose both sides for 30% less of the screen. Here's a screen with the bars for comparison. This is what The Order 1886 is being rendered in and I'm surprised no one said anything about Evil Within. If feels like I'm playing with a shoe box on my face and the claustrophobic feeling is annoying, not tense or scary, and more so when items can't be intereacted with because the black bars knock em off the screen.
-POV can't be changed and it looks worse if you force 16:9.

As for the game itself it's okay. It's got great atmosphere and I wish the story would take itself seriously to preserve it. Mikami loves his B movie Hollywood shit but, Christ almighty, when the gameplay is mediocre, or complete shit, don't go stepping all over what could make the game memorable.

This game is awesome so far, but I'm only three chapters in, so I'll withhold final judgement. I think a lot of people are just butthurt about the locked 30 fps and odd aspect ratio, and are taking it out on the game as a result.
Game looks ugly as fuck like someone wiped their ass over every texture
You're playing the game on a console that's almost a decade old and you're complaining about the fucking visuals? The game has some muddy textures and could use anti-aliasing that isn't FXAA but otherwise it's gorgeous. It has some of the best art design I've seen in a game in the past couple years.

Btw, the PC version runs fine for me with just the shadow quality turned down a bit, and I'm using fairly old hardware too.

I'm playing the PS3 version. Other than texture pop-in, I like the look of the game.

At Chapter 10 now. The combat has a certain cadence to it compared to RE4. It's not that killing enemies is hard, you just don't get a free pass as often as in RE4. You can't go nuts with melee attacks, for example, and everything that helps with crowd control is limited. If you want to kill a group of enemies, you either use explosives (limited), burn them with a match (also limited), or abuse the environment (many fights happen in big rooms with multiple doors and vantage points).

On the plus side, you are definitely equipped well enough to outsmart any enemy encounter. From proximity mines to OHKO enemy weapons that you can only use once. My favorite parts are when I know there's going to be a big fight and I booby-trap the entire room Home Alone style before I trigger the mob.

You also can't carry too much ammo, but you can upgrade your stock to carry more stuff.

It's pretty interesting, like... you'd think the guy who created RE4 would just make a similar game and you'd crush it with experience, but there's a lot of new ideas and strategy here. I can see people not enjoying the slow and methodical planning sometimes (as well as the occasional cheap shot), but I'm having a great time.

Also, the Silent Hill influence is all over the place.

Finished The Evil Within!

I loved the game. It does Silent Hill better than the more recent SHs at least, there's a ton of weird stuff to see, and it's a very rewarding game in its design.

You never have to worry about getting stuck forever due to scarce ammo, but during any one fight, it's always kind of a struggle to walk out of there without wasting supplies. So while you do find enough shots to survive between the closest checkpoint and a tough room, the game is smart enough to keep you from hoarding and building a huge arsenal (unlike pretty much every post-RE4 survival/action horror). The next fight is always just as intense as the previous.

I may jump right into NG+ to collect the missing map pieces and upgrade my gear.

Yeah, I went into the game with the intention of hoarding my ass off, but it's not really a feasible strategy. The game is set up so that the run to the next checkpoint will almost always sap the majority of your resources, no matter how frugal and sneaky you are.

I wonder if sshplur even played the game or whether he was just regurgitating internet outrage over the technical issues.
